Treatment of strabismus
We specialise in the treatment of strabismus in children and adults.
We will make sure that the result is excellent and the treatment is pleasant and easy!
We offer the latest methods of diagnosing and treating strabismus, as well as fixing a stable cosmetic and functional result. We conduct examinations using precise modern equipment. Our doctors and optometrists are proficient in various methods of reliably determining the angle of strabismus using unique equipment.
The clinic has a hardware treatment room where strabismus angle correction is performed using computer programmes and simulators. Regular courses of classes in this room consolidate the effect of strabismus and amblyopia (reduced vision in the squinting eye) treatment. Amblyopia treatment programmes can also improve vision in cases where this decrease in visual acuity is not related to strabismus.
We carry out surgical treatment of strabismus in cases where the problem cannot be eliminated by conservative methods.
And only using original techniques that give a guaranteed result. We take on complex cases, correct problems obtained during operations in other medical centres, and are an expert-level department for the treatment of strabismus. Surgical correction of strabismus is possible at any age and with any clinical variant of strabismus, including in previously operated patients, as well as in cases of complex vertical strabismus.
Delicate, cosmetic, methods using an operating microscope, suture adjustment techniques, and the use of top quality suture material – all this distinguishes strabismus surgery at the German Eye Clinic. We provide our patients with the European quality of modern ophthalmology.
Our advantages:
- The use of a radio wave knife for incisions during surgery allows for contactless tissue dissection, reducing bleeding of blood vessels due to their simultaneous coagulation. Radio waves produce a sterilising effect, which reduces the risk of infectious complications. Tissue recovery takes place with the formation of a delicate scar. There are contraindications, consult a doctor!
- To adapt the wound in children, we use absorbable suture material. This does not require removal of sutures in the postoperative period and repeated anaesthesia, allowing to avoid additional psycho-emotional trauma not only for the child but also for his parents.
- The technique of ‘adjustable’ sutures allows adult patients to adjust the tension of the operated muscle in the first days after surgery to achieve the optimal cosmetic effect.

Frequently asked questions
Binocular vision develops during the first 6–7 years of life. Therefore, for certain types of strabismus, surgical treatment is a necessary step and helps create the conditions for the proper functioning of the binocular system in children.
In adult patients, the restoration or formation of 3D vision depends on the functioning of the nervous system, the patient’s age, any coexisting eye conditions, and the type of strabismus.
Yes. The list of necessary tests can be found on our website at the following link: https://klinika.ua/en/in-preparation-for-the-operation/ (The list of additional preoperative examinations may be expanded by the doctor during a comprehensive consultation.)
After obtaining the results, you need to schedule a preoperative examination with both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist.
In the first few days after surgery, you may experience eyelid swelling, tearing, eye redness, a foreign body sensation, and discomfort. For 2 weeks, it is recommended to avoid heavy physical exertion and prolonged bending of the head downward, and for a month, you should refrain from going to swimming pools or saunas. The rehabilitation plan is tailored individually based on the examination and the patient’s specific needs.
Full recovery usually takes up to 1 month.
Treatment methods are chosen individually based on the examination results and the patient’s particular situation.
Depending on the type and severity of the strabismus, the doctor may suggest alternative treatment options such as botulinum toxin injections to correct strabismus, wearing glasses, contact lenses, or prism correction, as well as specialized vision therapy aimed at improving control of the eye muscles and developing binocular vision.
Strabismus Treatment in Adults at the “German Eye Clinic”
Strabismus is a fairly common condition among both children and adults. Unfortunately, it can be either congenital or acquired, and there are several reasons for this:- Myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism. These are conditions we frequently hear about in today’s world. They can cause strabismus, as the human brain may “switch off” an eye that cannot focus clearly, thereby weakening its muscles. As a result, the eye may begin to deviate.
- Refractive error in which one eye sees worse than the other. Different visual acuities, like the conditions mentioned above, can block the functioning of one eye. Over time, the brain’s “neglect” of one eye can lead to strabismus.
- Physical injuries to the head or directly to the eyes, which can affect the nerve fibers and disrupt the nerves controlling eye movement.
- Other eye diseases (cataracts, glaucoma) and systemic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, etc.).

It is a misconception that surgical correction of strabismus is a dangerous procedure with negative consequences. The “German Eye Clinic” offers cutting-edge diagnostic methods using an operating microscope, helping to determine the optimal treatment for each patient individually. If strabismus cannot be treated conservatively, strabismus correction surgery can help in the most challenging cases. Together, we can restore your excellent vision. Our specialists, who have performed numerous surgeries, will show you that strabismus surgery is not something extraordinary. You need not worry if you have received such a diagnosis; the key is to start treatment in a timely manner and follow all recommendations. Early consultation with an ophthalmologist accelerates problem detection and simplifies its resolution. We aim to prove to as many patients as possible that modern ophthalmology has reached a level where even the most complex cases can be resolved. To achieve this, we use:- A radio-wave surgical knife for incisions. This advanced medical instrument reduces pain, speeds up healing, ensures high precision, minimizes the risk of infections, and provides many other benefits for surgical strabismus treatment in adults.
- Self-absorbing suture material, which does not require stitch removal and thus makes the postoperative adaptation more comfortable.
- “Adjustable” sutures — a technique of suture placement that ensures an optimal cosmetic outcome after the operation, as doctors can fine-tune the tension of the operated muscle in the first few days post-surgery.
